Dissociation Therapy in Pennsylvania
You may not call it dissociation.
You might just know that sometimes you go numb. Or blank. Or disconnect from your body. You may lose time, shut down under stress, or feel like you’re watching your life from a distance.
I provide dissociation therapy in Pennsylvania for adults navigating complex trauma, shutdown patterns, and nervous system overwhelm.
Dissociation is not a flaw. It is a protective response, one that develops when overwhelm exceeds capacity.
What Is Dissociation?
Dissociation is a nervous system response that creates distance from overwhelming experience.
Dissociation can show up in subtle or significant ways, including:
• feeling numb or emotionally flat
• spacing out or losing track of time
• feeling detached from your body
• difficulty accessing memories
• sudden shutdown under stress
• feeling unreal or disconnected from surroundings
For many adults, dissociation developed in environments where staying fully present did not feel safe.
Dissociation, Complex Trauma & the Freeze Response
Dissociation is often connected to complex PTSD and long-term relational trauma. When fight or flight are not possible, the nervous system may move into freeze or shutdown.
These responses are intelligent adaptations.
In therapy, we approach dissociation gently. The goal is not to force full presence immediately, but to build capacity gradually so your system feels safe enough to stay connected.
Dissociation & Neurodivergence
For neurodivergent adults (ADHD, autism, AuDHD), dissociation can sometimes overlap with sensory overload, burnout, or masking fatigue.
Therapy that respects both trauma and neurodivergence is essential.
I offer dissociation therapy that is neurodivergent-affirming and paced collaboratively, with attention to sensory experience and nervous system regulation.
My Approach to Dissociation Therapy
My work integrates:
- Somatic (body-based) trauma therapy
- EMDR within ongoing relational treatment
- Nervous system regulation
- Attachment-informed therapy
- Consent and pacing
As a somatic informed therapist, I pay close attention to titration, working in small, tolerable increments so your system is not overwhelmed.
EMDR is integrated thoughtfully and is never used as a stand-alone protocol.
Sessions are held for adults throughout Pennsylvania.
Is Dissociation Therapy the Right Fit?
This work may be helpful if:
- You shut down under stress
- You feel disconnected from your body
- You experience emotional numbness
- You lose time or go blank in conversations
- You’ve been told you’re “too sensitive” or “too much”
- You want trauma therapy that moves at a regulated pace
You do not need a diagnosis of a dissociative disorder to begin.
